A New Voice for Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in Australia

ASPMS is a newly established national professional society — founded with a clear purpose: to advance the podiatric profession through education, research, professional standards, and a collaborative community.

Our Founding

Built from the Ground Up

The Australian Society of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery was established in 2026 by a group of founding members committed to creating a dedicated national home for podiatric medicine and surgery in Australia.

Our Purpose

What ASPMS Exists to Do

To advance education, research, professional standards, and community in podiatric medicine and surgery — for the benefit of practitioners, patients, and the public.

Education and Professional Development

Develop and deliver high-quality CPD, scientific meetings, conferences, workshops, webinars, clinical education, peer learning, and educational resources for members at every stage of their career.

Clinical Excellence and Patient Care

Promote excellence, quality, safety and evidence-based practice in podiatric medicine and surgery, and support improvements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and related structures.

Research and Scientific Advancement

Encourage and support research relevant to the specialty, promote dissemination and critical appraisal of scientific evidence, and facilitate collaboration between members, researchers, universities and health services.

Professional Standards

Develop, promote and publish professional, educational and clinical guidance — facilitating discussion and consensus on clinical practice, quality improvement and patient safety.

Professional Community

Provide a professional forum for podiatric specialists and other podiatric practitioners, fostering coordination, mentoring, and the exchange of knowledge across Australia.

Governance

Structure and Accountability

ASPMS is governed by a Board of Directors of between five and nine members, a majority of whom must be Full Members — that is, practitioners holding current specialist registration in podiatric surgery. The Board is responsible for strategic direction, financial oversight, membership, education and CPD strategy, professional standards, and legal compliance. ASPMS is a professional membership organisation. It is not a statutory health practitioner regulator and does not grant specialist registration or authority to practise.

An Important Distinction

ASPMS is a professional membership organisation — not a statutory health practitioner regulator. Membership of ASPMS does not confer specialist registration, endorsement or authority to practise. Statutory specialist registration in podiatric surgery is granted by the Podiatry Board of Australia under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. Members must accurately represent their registration, qualifications and specialist status in accordance with the National Law and current Podiatry Board requirements.
